Yale's campus is situated in New Haven， Connecticut， and encompasses Gothic-style buildings (the oldest of which date to 1750)， halls of residence， and parks. Yale's assets include an endowment valued at $29.4 billion (as of September 2018)， the second largest of any academic institution， after Harvard， as well as the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art， which have collections of over 500，000 works of art， making it one of the world's largest university art collections. The Yale University Library， serving all of the University's schools， contains over 15 million volumes and is the third-largest academic and the tenth-largest library in the United States.
Yale's central campus in downtown New Haven covers 165 acres (67 ha). As of 2012[update]， its buildings represent a replacement value of $16 billion. The Yale campus is located in and helps define the Fair Havenarchitecture historic district， which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The most architecturally notable part of the campus is known as "the Quadrangles" or "the Plan，" an ensemble of twenty-two buildings that were constructed in the collegiate gothic style between 1917 and 1931. These "High Victorian" buildings are made of brownstone， with intricate carvings of gargoyles， animals and mythical creatures， and large arched gateways. The original and largest of the quadrangles is the Main Quadrangle ("M Quad") which consists of dormitories for freshmen. The main college dining hall， located in Connecticut Hall， is the oldest college building in America， dating to 1750.
